This course provides an overview of the intent of HIPAA law and how to comply with its regulations. Participants will learn the permitted uses and disclosures of their clients’ protected health information (PHI). Participants will learn specific strategies to safeguard the rights of the clients they serve. Participants will also learn to recognize legal situations in which PHI must be released. A brief review of administrative policies and procedures for covered entities will also be reviewed, as well as penalties for noncompliance. Although this course is not a source of legal counsel, it will give participants a summary of the requirements of the Privacy Rule and is an excellent resource for anyone in the mental health field.
