Independent play skills consist of a set of skills children acquire that enable them to engage in a variety of play activities without the involvement of other children or adults. For young children this may entail playing with toy cars, building with blocks, playing with pretend play toys such as a dollhouse or pretend kitchen, playing with art materials, playing with musical instruments, doing puzzles, playing outside on a play structure, digging in a sandbox, etc. As children get older they may still play with some of these things, but they may also begin to play independently on the computer, play with video games, play card games, play outdoor sports, etc. Even as adults, independent play skills are important. They are what, as adults, we refer to as hobbies. The purpose of independent play skills for all individuals is to provide meaningful and functional enjoyment during times when there is not a planned activity. For children who do not have independent play skills, they may engage in challenging behaviors when there is not a structured activity for which they can engage. This course was designed to provide caregivers with explicit guidelines to increase independent play. It is a completely online course and designed to be completed in under a half hour. You may log into your account and review the course materials as many times as you would like and you may take the online test at anytime.
