Course Description
This course has been designed to systematically evaluate Discrete Trial Training (DTT) and Normalized Language Instruction for the teaching of language skills. The course will discuss why alternative behavioral approaches to DTT may be sought that can yield better results for acquiring certain skills. The course stresses that applied behavior analysis is not “just DTT,” which is a misconception held by some. Techniques one could use to teach language acquisition utilizing discrete trial training will be explained, emphasizing that while these methods may be effective, research has shown that it may be more efficient and/or effective to use normalized language instruction.
A discussion drawing comparisons between the two approaches on the benefits or disadvantages to both of these methods will be made. The course will compare these on grounds of effectiveness, but also on a clinical level, comparing how these two approaches work respectively. A learning activity provides a case example to highlight the important points of the course. Eligible for one Type II BACB CE under Ethics and Professional Issues with successful completion.
