Course Description

The focus of this course is to present foundational knowledge of discrete trial training (DTT). The course has been broken into several sections that should provide a better understanding of DTT through knowledge of its origins, strengths, and weaknesses. To start, we will provide a historical overview of DTT. Here we will discuss Ole Ivar Lovaas, where and how DTT began, and review his seminal 1987 publication.  We will also discuss the article’s reception and criticisms at the time of its publication.

After an historical overview is presented, we will discuss the relevant advantages and disadvantages of utilizing this technique. We will explore how and where DTT can be useful, and when it may be advantageous to employ alternative strategies. We will also examine the criticisms of DTT and how these complaints can be avoided through proper practice. The course ends with a learning activity and a summation of important points throughout the module. Eligible for one Type II BACB CE under Ethics and Professional Issues with successful completion.
