Course Description

Current statistics suggest that the prevalence of autism spectrum disorders in the total population is dramatically increasing at a rate of 10-17% annually, with nearly 1 in 38 children affected.. This course is divided into several sections related to different types of neurological disorders, called Pervasive Developmental Disorders, including autism, Asperger’s Syndrome, Pervasive Developmental Disorder Not Otherwise Specified (PDD-NOS), Childhood Disintegrative Disorder (CDD), and Rett’s Syndrome.

Participants will review the signs and symptoms of children with autistic spectrum disorder and examine increasing prevalence, suggested etiology, screening methods, assessment tools and diagnostic indicators of such disorders. Treatment modalities will include traditional therapies, as well as complementary alternative medicines. Eligible for two Type II BACB CE under Ethics and Professional Issues with successful completion.This course has been divided into several sections, with each section containing information on various aspects of Autism Spectrum Disorders and the assessment and intervention related to these diagnoses. Each section is accompanied by a video presentation.

In the Overview section, we will define Pervasive Developmental Disorders, the similarities and differences among disorders that make up the Autism Spectrum Disorders and we will examine the statistics correlating to the prevalence of autism throughout the world.  In the Screening section, we will discuss the various methods and assessment tools used for identification of these developmental delays. 

The Assessment section provides general assessment information as well as specific tools used for diagnosing ASDs.  The Diagnosis section examines how ASDs are differentiated and diagnosed, with a history of the DSM criteria for the definition of autism. The Treatment section deals with early intervention in the treatment of ASDs and different types of therapies, including CAM, speech, and occupational therapies. Finally, the Case Example provides a case study, with discussion questions for a review of the course content.  Eligible for two Type II BACB CE under Ethics and Professional Issues with successful completion.
